Torch On Roofing
There's no better solution than Torch On Roofing
What is Torch On Roofing?
Torch on roofing is an immensely popular roofing solution for flat roofs throughout BC. In fact, it accounts for up to 80% of the market share of roofing products. While often compared to tar and gravel roofing, torch on roofing is the most lightweight solution available. A highly technical process, torch on roofing generally uses two plies of Modified Bitumen Membrane, each about 3-4 mm thick. Now, if you’re wondering how torch on roofing got its name, here’s why: both sides of the ply feature a thermofusible plastic surface, meaning they can be joined together seamlessly using heat. Which, in this case, is done using a propane torch. After the roofing material is rolled onto the roof and thermally welded, a permanent bond is formed between the layers. And unlike some other flat and sloped roof solutions, torch on roofing leaves no unpleasant fumes during the installation process.

Advantages of Torch-on roofs:
Durability
One main benefit of torch-on roofing is durability. Torch-on roofs can last 25-30+ years when installed correctly and have annual maintenance checks completed. They’re also highly resistant to rain and other damaging weather, rot, pests, and falling debris. Torch-on roofing is often a wise choice for buildings in the wet climate around the Vancouver area.
Heat and UV Resistance
Some lighter coloured torch-on roofs reflect UV rays, which helps to keep your indoor temperatures cool (especially during the summer months). This will help to save on air conditioning costs and make your property more energy efficient. In addition, there are torch-on products which can achieve a LEED credit.
Less Odor
Tar-and-gravel roofs can have quite an odor, often requiring residents to leave their home while the roof is being applied. Torch-on roofs do not require a hot tar kettle on the ground, which means occupants will rarely have to leave a property during application if they don’t want to.
Leak Resistant
Thanks to the heat-welding process, torch on roofing is highly resistant to leaks. Due to the multiple membrane layers, torch on roofing is one of the best solutions for waterproofing above and below ground.
Waterproof
Torch-on roofs are completely sealed off, making them totally waterproof. This is hugely beneficial when it comes to preventing leaks, even during the biggest storms.
Cost Effective
Since torch-on roofs are relatively low maintenance and highly weather resistant, they’re a very cost-effective option for property owners. The initial investment might be slightly more expensive than traditional shingles, but the long-term benefits will more than make up for it.
Easy Modifications
Modifications, such as installing a skylight, can be easily done to your torch-on roof without much preparation to the existing membrane.
Additional Installation
In addition to your roof, you can install torch-on roof membranes to your foundation or patio decks as well. Since the material is so durable, you can install decking over your finished product without a problem. This is great for patios over living space.
Low Maintenance
While torch on roofing rarely requires it, this roofing material is easily repairable. Compared to other roofing types, torch on roofing is less costly and intensive to fix.
Flexible
Torch on roofing comes with excess rubber to allow the material to expand and contract when exposed to extreme heat or cold. This prevents cracking in the material and enhances the lifespan and efficiency of the flat roof.
Additional Installation
In addition to your roof, you can install torch-on roof membranes to your foundation or decks as well. Since the material is so durable, you can install decking over your finished product without a problem.
Cons of Torch-on Roofs:
Only Applicable to Flat Roofs
While remaining a highly effective waterproofing solution, torch on roofing can only be applied to flat roofs, not sloped.
Requires Expert Installation
Some lighter coloured torch-on roofs reflect UV rays, which helps to keep your indoor temperatures cool (especially during a heatwave). This will help to save on air conditioning costs and make your property more energy efficient. In addition, there are torch-on products which can achieve a LEED credit.
