Brighten Your Home With Skylights
The idea of using the sun to light up a room is not a new concept. In fact, the idea was developed in ancient Rome nearly 2000 years ago.
A Skylight (sometimes referred to as a Roof Light) is a light-transmitting structure that forms part of the roof space of a building for daylighting purposes.
Natural views and “adding space” to a room, similar to adding mirrors on the walls, Skylights can make a room “feel bigger” and more spacious. Plus, you can get a view of night sky or nature during the day.

Benefits of Skylight Installation
Rooftop Windows and Skylights can give several advantages to homeowners. They can increase the overall value (equity) of your home and can solve certain issues in stuffy, cold, or dark rooms.
The biggest benefit of Skylights is how they let natural light into your space. Why does that matter for you? Natural light is known to improve mood and even help with performance in workplaces.
The Solar Powered “Fresh Air” Skylight features a solar panel that captures any available daylight and uses it to recharge a highly efficient, fully concealed battery-powered operator and control system. The battery-powered operator is the power source that opens and closes the skylight.

Skylight Services in Burnaby, BC
With rainy winters and minimal sunlight in the lower mainland, it’s important to optimize our sunlight exposure for both our mental and physical health. A skylight can help tremendously. Whether or not you’re getting outside, a skylight allows for more sunlight in the home so you’re getting your Vitamin D in an accessible and sustainable way. With most of us living in smaller homes here in Burnaby, skylights can create a feeling of spaciousness. A small skylight lets in significantly more light than a regular window and can make a small room feel much brighter and spacious. Because of this, skylights are a popular option for those living in rainy Burnaby.
Skylights come in a variety of different sizes
The average size of skylight is equal to about 5%-10% of the square footage of the room it’s installed in. Because of this, you can imagine how much the sizing differs depending on the size of the room you’re hoping to light! That being said, on average a skylight is 14-72 inches in width and 16-96 inches in length. There’s obviously a large range that can differ substantially depending on roof shape, size of room, window angle, and lighting desires. However, having numbers can sometimes be helpful. Depending on your space and expectations, we can help you find the perfect sized skylight for your home in Burnaby.
Argon Gas is used in all VELUX Skylights and Roof Windows.
A colorless, odorless, inert gaseous element constituting approximately 1% of the earth’s atmosphere, used in electric lamps, fluorescent tubes, and insulated glass window panes. Because argon is denser than air, it is a good insulator.
Argon is the gas most often used between panes in a double- or triple-glazed window, providing more thermal efficiency than having air between the panes.
Skylight windows can open to let in the fresh air. This helps with cross ventilation in stuffy rooms, freshens up the air and cools down your living spaces without turning on the air conditioner.
Saving on energy costs for electric and heating.

Benefits of Skylights
Daylight
A skylight delivers 2 times the amount of daylight a wall window can, brightening the interior of your home.
Daylight helps to balance our Circadian Rhythm, keeping our body's natural 24-hour clock in tune. Lack of daylight may cause sleep disturbance, stress, obesity, fatigue and depression.
Save money! With more daylight, you will reduce your dependance on electrical lighting.
Fresh Air
3 times a day keeps the doctor away! Open your house to fresher and cleaner air for a healthier home.
Maximize the chimney effect, opening your skylight at the highest point in your home allows you to release hot, stale air trapped at the top of a ceiling.
Reduce dependancy on air conditioning and rely on night time cooling, saving you money!
A Statement
Enjoy the privacy and beautiful sky views.
Create a beautiful architectural feature in your home making you the envy of the neighbourhood.
Experience your home in a whole new and well-lit light.
Types of skylights
There are three main types of skylights:
Ventilating skylights
Ventilating skylights are skylights that open and are sometimes referred to as “roof windows”. These are excellent if you’re looking to increase air circulation in an already stuffy space or if you’re in need of ventilation in a room that collects too much humidity. Ventilating skylights are most often found in kitchens, studio spaces, and bathrooms.
Tubular skylights
Tubular skylights are long and narrow reflective tube-shaped skylights that stick out the top of a small space such as a hallway, closet, pantry, or foyer. These are also our most economical option for those who are looking to stick to a budget or are hoping to have multiple skylights installed.
Fixed skylights
The most commonly requested skylight installation available. These are low maintenance and perfect for providing additional lighting in darker spaces. Fixed skylights are mid-range in price and are suitable for most rooms and spaces as they can vary significantly in size, making them very multi-purpose.
